I make music for a living, and somewhere in all those years of sessions I learned the thing every producer learns eventually: people feel a record before they have a single thought about it. I have spent my working life trying to make that first moment happen on purpose, in songs, and now in rooms.
Rooms built the way records are built
I built this room because I needed it. Firstwater is that work at room scale. Each night is a facilitated group experience built on engineered sound: a room in low light, sub-bass you feel in your sternum, a formal opening and a formal close, and seventy-five minutes with nothing to do and nothing to say.
Every session is built around something worth putting down. The first nights are for people carrying the end of a relationship, and more are coming behind them, each with its own reason to lie down on the floor.
Slow, thoughtful attentiveness to sound
A room can sound like a gymnasium or it can sound like the inside of a cello, and the difference between the two is the same discipline I use to make records: sub-bass placed for the chest, arcs built the way songs are built, a space treated like a studio instead of a stage.
And if I'm honest, the sound is only one part of the night. The words at the open and the close matter as much, and so does the ritual, and so do the people on the floor beside you. I bring the same attentiveness to all of it, because the night is something we make together.
I learned what sound does to a room from the stage, years before I could measure it. My name is D. Fox. I have spent the years since producing music and studying how it moves people, and Firstwater is the closest I have come to using all of it at once.
The sessions that we hold at Firstwater in Denver gather people from all walks of life and states into a place of gratitude, stillness, and joy. Each ceremony uses expert facilitation, healing sound, and sometimes movement and exercises to provide an opening that didn't exist before you got there. Come exactly as you please. This is a place where you can lay down things that don't serve you, or leave a completely different person.
