Isolated together

Most sound baths seat a group and give each person a private hour apiece. What we do is together.

You can get darkness, stillness, and very good sound at home with headphones. What you cannot get at home is a group of people a few feet away, practicing the same thing at the same time. That is the part I build for.

What happens at most sound baths? #

Most sound baths run the same way. People arrive, find a mat, lie down a polite distance apart, and have a private experience for an hour. Nobody talks, everybody focuses on themselves, and afterward everyone rolls up their mat and drives home. I call this isolated together: a crowd in one place, each person alone in it.

I want to be careful here, because that hour is worth something. A nap in a warm, dark place with good sound is a legitimate outcome, and I mean that with no irony at all. But thirty people drove across town to lie down near each other, and most of them could have stayed home without missing much.

What changes when the group practices together? #

Here is what I know from my own sitting. Alone, when I get distracted, or I land on a discouraging thought, I am the only one there to notice and come back. Some days I do. Some days the whole sit goes to an argument I should have won last Tuesday.

In a group, the people around me are not all getting distracted at the same time. When I drift, somebody a few feet away is still in it, and I can find my way back by them, the way a player who loses the count finds it again from the band. I spent my working life in music, and that is the most musician sentence I can offer about this: an ensemble holds a tempo no single player holds alone. Sitting near people who came for the same thing, I stay in it longer, I go further down, and I come back to it more reliably. I have sat both ways for years, and that difference is the reason Firstwater exists.

Why not just listen at home? #

Headphones win on a few counts. The sound can be excellent, the schedule is yours, and nobody snores three feet away. If the sound were the whole offer I would tell you to stay home, and I am making recordings for exactly that use.

But at home you are the only one holding your practice, and an hour beside other people who came for the same thing is a different practice altogether. The sessions are where I do this in person. Sit both ways in the same month and compare the drives home.
